MIDSOMMAR is the brand new thriller by director Ari Aster and it’s hitting cinemas on July 5.
What initially started as a summer road-trip ends in disaster and subsequently becomes everything a fan of horror movies would want to see in a film. Here’s the lowdown…
What’s the movie about?
The narrative is centred around Christian and Dani, a couple who’ve been experiencing plenty of relationship problems.
Following a personal tragedy that rocked their romance, the duo decided on taking a trip to Sweden with their good pals Mark and Josh.
Upon their arrival, the group visit a village that’s hosting a festival – an event which only takes place every 90 years – and are encouraged to join in by locals.
It isn’t long, however, before they realise that the festivities consist of horrific rituals.
Who is Ari Aster and what films is he famous for directing?
Ari Aster worked as the movie’s director and writer.
He’s an American filmmaker, landing his big break in 2018 with the release of his previous motion picture titled Hereditary.
It starred notable names such as Toni Collette and Alex Wolff and grossed an incredible $79.3 million at the worldwide box office.
Given the success of Hereditary, there definitely seemed to be a lot of pressure for Ari to produce another project filled with originality and authenticity.
What have the reviews been like?
Critics are absolutely loving Midsommar – and if we were to base our opinions from those who’ve already seen it, the movie is certainly a must-watch.
One person took to Twitter, writing: “MIDSOMMAR: swooning, unnerving, and exhilarating. I think I loved it. Ari Aster brings dread to daytime, flowers, and smiling faces.
Another user continued to praise the film by tweeting: “If HEREDITARY is about the dark family skeletons hidden away in the shadows, MIDSOMMAR is about the skeletons we proudly hang on the wall. Their visual styles reflect this.
“In short: MIDSOMMAR rules. Lots of people are going to hate it.”
Variety described the film as “an admirably strange, thematically muddled curiosity from a talented filmmaker who allows his ambitions to outpace his execution.”
Meanwhile, FreshFictionTV’s Preston Barta, quipped: “[I’m] pretty sure it was directed by Satan himself.”
